BBC has confirmed a 2015 Doctor Who Christmas special which will see Alex Kingston return as Professor River Song.

The special, which begins filming this week, will see River Song performing alongside her husband’s new incarnation, in the form of Peter Capaldi, for the first time.

It will be written by Executive Producer Steven Moffat, executive produced by Brian Minchin, produced by Nikki Wilson and directed by Douglas Mackinnon (Doctor Who, Sherlock).

“To be honest, I did not know whether River would ever return to the show, but here she is, back with the Doctor for the Christmas special,” she said.

“Steven Moffat is on glittering form, giving us an episode filled with humour and surprise guest castings. I met Peter for the first time at Monday’s read through. We had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September?, why not!”

Steven Moffat added, “Another Christmas, another special for Doctor Who – and what could be more special than the return of Alex Kingston as Professor River Song? The last time the Doctor saw her, she was a ghost. The first time he met her, she died. So how can he be seeing her again? As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it’s a matter of time…”

Further cast are yet to be announced.

  1. She’s an over used character, IMDB shows 16 appearances but the character was only created in season 4. Most of her episodes end up being convoluted and rather than explaining plot points they’re written off as “spoilers”.

    1. I think you mean “spoilers, sweetie!” 😉

      Re: my earlier comment…
Concept – 8/10. Potential to be a good foil/equal for the Doctor & driver of storylines; could even be said to represent ‘hope’ after RTD overplayed the Doctor’s ‘lonely god’ aspect so heavy-handedly (& yet ignored it by giving him friends everywhere!).
Execution – 2/10. Twee & annoying set of tropes & catchphrases overused to add ‘mystery’. More often than not a deux ex machina for getting out of (or in to) trouble.
Cynical view – obvious fan-insert character. “Hmm, who’s our audience? Tragics will watch anyway; boys want to be the Doctor; girls have the Nancy Drew companions; and the tragic’s wives/mums have … I know, let’s invent a wife/mother for the Doctor (and a bit more appropriate eye-candy for the dads)!”.

      1. You have captured my thoughts exactly. Chuck in that other over-used deux ex machina, the sonic screwdriver, and you’ll have the reasons why I’ve thought the last 5 years or so have been lame fan-fodder.

  2. Guess they had to announce this to stop the rumors and cut back on the paps if they do any location shoots for the special. Really hope we get to see more of River but I do wonder how long before River mets the Doctor for the first time, meaning the last time we’ll see her on screen.

  3. Unlike the previous poster … I am thrilled to hear that River Song will be back to go head to head with “old” sweetie Doctor. Hope Missy is in it as well … that will be a fabulous bitch fight!!! 🙂
