A Current Affair viewers have donated $510,000 for a young family in need.

On Monday, ACA and Rotary Australia launched a nationwide appeal to raise funds for James Lehane and his children Ashley, 4, and Heath, 3, after James’ wife Andrea died tragically in September. She was killed on a pedestrian crossing outside a Melbourne shopping centre by a teenager riding an illegal monkey bike.

Tracy Grimshaw said: “James Lehane’s story touched all of us. Every Australian knows a young family just like his. We can all imagine their lives: deeply in love with their soulmate, starting a family, paying off their home and planning their future. As James told us, ‘Who dies going shopping?’

“I think in these stories Australians want desperately to reach out a hand to someone like James, and to his two little kids. And even though nothing can bring Andrea back we can help by easing his financial pressure and also letting him know he’s not alone and that her life – and her death – matters to us.”

  1. It’s all very sad but it seems grossly unfair to me that this one family is chosen by ACA and Rotary to benefit from a public appeal when there are many more families in greater need of assistance.

      1. Sure, but that something could so easily be to give $50,000 to 10 families who really need it, say for medical bills or in-home care, rather than giving half a million to a single parent bringing up two children. Raising a family as a sole parent is something that half of my friends either currently manage to do or experienced growing up, all without winning the lottery.
