NSW GLBTI community health organisation ACON is defending its choice of Karl Stefanovic as a nominee in its annual Honour Awards.
The Today presenter was nominated in the Media category for his apology following transphobic comments. The nod also noted his 60 Minutes report on transgender children.
But ABC observes that some social media users criticised the choice, given his apology was after using the word “tranny” in a derogatory context. It referenced several Twitter and Facebook posts that objected to his inclusion.
But ACON responded: “Whilst Karl did make a huge and hurtful mistake in the comments he made, his immediate act of contrition and acknowledgment that his words did hurt trans people was very commendable.”
Other nominees included Monique Schafter from 7:30 and The Feed’s Patrick Abboud.
Media nominees:
Shannon Molloy (Daily Telegraph – RendezView) – for his evocative and deeply personal opinion piece on his own experience with bullying and why programs like Safe Schools are necessary.
Janine Cohen (ABCTV – Australian Story) – for telling the story about sixteen-year-old Georgie Stone, who has battled prejudice, bullying and legal hurdles relating to her transition.
Monique Schafter – for her body of work on the 7:30 Report and ongoing championing of LGBTI content on the national broadcaster.
Patrick Abboud (SBS) – for his consistent commitment to the reporting of LGBTI issues across national television, radio and online, along with presenting the national broadcast of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.
Mark Whittaker (SBS) – for his work on investigations into gay-hate crimes in Australia, most notably crimes committed in South Australia and Adelaide.
Karl Stefanovic (Nine Network) – for his ground breaking and earnest apology to the transgender community following unfortunate comments made on the Today Show, and also for a subsequent 60 Minutes piece on young transgender people.

The other nominees seem far more worthy to me.
Making an ignorant mistake and getting caught out does not make one a hero!
Sunrise is unwatchable with Kochie at the helm.
Agreed. Koch is very stale to watch due to his whiny voice and his own bias. The Sunrise Team continue to talk nonsense most of the time. It made me want to switch to Today Show.
I did say Kochie is not much better than Karl.
To each his own.
Ridiculous if he gets the award…. there kinda has to be an integrity about these things doesn’t there??
Telling that there is nobody from Sky News Australia or The Australian nominated. If there were awards for homophobia they would romp in.
I am usually the minority here but I feel that he is a bit over-rated. Trying too hard to be ‘your friend’ on television. Kochie is not much better but I have been wondering why he didn’t even get a nomination for a Gold Logie especially during the time when Sunrise was really popular. Having said that, if that Block host could win a Gold, maybe it’s a blessing in disguise not to have anything to do with Logie. No disrespect to other worthy winners of course.
I am always in shock he won a gold logie or any award all he does is laugh all the time on today at his own jokes
