No sign of 7flix for Prime7 viewers

A number of regional readers have been asking about news on 7flix coming to Prime7 viewers.

Sadly, Prime7 tells me there is no update.

Last year Prime7 advised it had no commercial arrangements in place with Seven for 7flix.

“The addition of any new channel is technically challenging, takes time and requires substantial capital investment. From a broadcast engineering perspective, regional broadcasters are far more complex businesses than metro operations, covering larger geographic areas with multiple signals that service a large number of local areas across regional Australia,” it told viewers via Facebook.

Viewers can still access PLUS7 catch-up titles, if you have reliable internet in the bush.

  1. If you have a decent internet connection (ha ha funny in regional Australia) just watch live on Plus Seven. Honestly you’re not missing much. Prime won’t make much money out of it so they’re in no hurry to provide it. But good excuse to make 29 people redundant.

  2. People need to realise, that Prime, etc are just content affiliates.

They have no corporate or ASX affiliation with one another.

But some do (e.g.) 7 QLD is owned and operated by Seven.

I really hope 7flix comes to regional areas outside QLD soon, its a good channel and provides great alternatives, especially good movies on weekends & as David’s article said the other day, is rating well this year (it’s also rating well in regional QLD).

To me, Prime Media don’t seem that interested.

    1. “They have no corporate or ASX affiliation with one another.”

That’s just not true. Seven owns a 14.9% stake in Prime Media Group and Prime has a secondary corporate office at Jones Bay Wharf (Seven’s head office).

  3. Thanks, David, for keeping we regional TV Tonight readers up-to-date on this issue. Prime’s opposition – the four other networks and their regional affiliates – seem to have had no problem converting their main channels to high definition, certainly in Albury where I live. What IS the problem Prime Media Group? By refusing to switch Prime7 to HD and not adding 7flix to your suite of channels you are doing yourselves and your viewers a real disservice.

  4. Why should regional viewers be penalised and disadvantaged compared to their capital city cousins .prime is only interested in profits .it has no HD channels no local news and no 7flix either .its dissapinting really because I got to watch 7flix when in Melbourne last week and it’s a really good channel.time for media law changes the sooner the better

  5. Majority of my viewing is done via streaming apps these days. The little I watch on FTA is streamed using a stick computer connected to TV. I got sick of being treated as a second class viewer because I live in a regional area. The picture is terrific. I can bypass the regionals and watch 7Flix, Ten shows (catch up) without mappy and Nine’s metro news instead of the half-arsed “local” offering. Their loss.

    1. It’s all about money. The increase in program copyright fees, the extra bandwidth costs from playout centre to local control room and an upgrade and reconfig to the TX multiplexer unit. Why spend the money now when the company will be sold straight after the Senate passes changes to the legislation? Crying poor and getting viewer complaints is just strategy in a bigger game.

  6. I’m guessing that we could essentially change the word “Prime” to “Southern Cross” and we have an update for Tasmania too? Wouldn’t mind 7flix as 7 seem to have given up on playing most of their US shows on anything except 7flix!

      1. Yep, realise all that. Still, 7flix is a 7 channel, not Prime’s – I think it’s a bit rich to complain about Prime not carrying one of 7’s minor niche channels when they’ve got their own to look after.

Then again, people wanted to kick NITV to the kerb just to make room for community TV…

  7. It’s an interesting situation. I was under the belief the main contributing factor for Prime to outsource its playout operations to Mediahub last year was to roll out HD and 7Flix. Mediahub are already broadcasting WIN in HD and 7Flix to metro markets. Obviously it takes time to roll it out but the 6 month anniversary has come and gone.

  8. What gobble goop! They have put us bush viewers on the back burn again.I’m 1 and a quarter hours from melbourne and still nothing, shame on you 7prime,do something for us!

  9. Whole it might be challenging Prime should have pre-empted the need for extra capacity and planned accordingly. Now regional viewers are getting a sub standard service. It’s not acceptable given the amount of time 7Flix has been available in the metropolitan areas. At least they can watch the live feed online on plus 7 if they really want to.
